Terms of use
These terms govern your use of Arts of Bodhi (artsofbodhi.com). They are written in plain English; they are not legal advice. Use of the site is your acceptance of these terms.
What this site is
Arts of Bodhi is a curated visual reference for East Asian Buddhist art — a free, advertising-free reading log edited against verifiable museum and primary-text sources. The site is independent and carries no institutional affiliation.
What this site is not
Arts of Bodhi is not a religious authority, a teaching lineage, a practice site, an academic journal, a medical or therapeutic resource, or a legal opinion. Articles describe the iconography, transmission history, and material culture of Buddhist art. They do not characterise living practitioners, take sovereignty positions, claim spiritual authority, or offer medical, therapeutic, healing, or legal guidance.
If you are looking for practice instruction, consult a qualified teacher in the relevant lineage. If you are looking for medical or therapeutic guidance, consult a licensed practitioner. If you are looking for legal advice, consult a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.
Editorial accuracy
Articles are evergreen and reviewed against published museum records and named-scholar literature. Every piece carries at least four sources, verifiable from the article footer. Despite editorial care, errors of attribution, period, dimension, translation, or scholarship are possible. Where an error is identified and confirmed, the article is corrected and an editorial note is added.
The site is a reading log, not a substitute for primary sources. Where a museum catalogue, a critical edition, or a peer-reviewed publication disagrees with bodhi, the primary source governs.
Image reproduction
Images are reproduced under the rights line declared by the source collection — public-domain dedications (CC0, Met Open Access, Cleveland Open Access, Smithsonian Open Access), open-access-in-practice licences (ColBase, e-Museum, KOGL Type 1), and equivalent declared statuses. The full per-tier accounting is on the image-rights page.
bodhi does not claim ownership of reproduced images and does not grant licence rights it has not received. Re-use of images depends on the underlying source’s rights statement, not on bodhi.
If you are a rights-holder and believe an image is misattributed, mis-licensed, or improperly reproduced, the takedown procedure is on the image-rights page.
Editorial text
Editorial text — the prose written for bodhi, distinct from quoted passages and primary-source citations — is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) licence. You may copy, adapt, and redistribute the editorial text under the conditions of that licence: attribution to Arts of Bodhi with a link back to the source page, and share-alike licensing of any derivative.
Quoted passages, primary-text citations, and named-scholar excerpts are not licensed by bodhi; they remain under the rights of their respective authors and publishers and are reproduced under fair-use / fair-dealing / quotation-right provisions of applicable copyright law.
The full licence enumeration is on the licence page.
Acceptable use
The site is freely accessible. Reading, linking to, citing, archiving (personal or institutional), and re-use under the editorial-text licence above are explicitly invited.
Behaviour that imposes disproportionate load on the hosting infrastructure
— mass automated scraping at request rates that interfere with normal
service, denial-of-service attempts, or scraping while ignoring
robots.txt — may result in network-level rate-limiting. The editor
prefers to be asked: a polite email describing your archival or research
purpose will usually receive a constructive response, including bulk
data exports where reasonable.
No warranty
The site is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. The editor makes no warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, non-infringement, or uninterrupted availability. Use of the site is at your own risk.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by Dutch law, the editor’s aggregate liability arising from or related to your use of the site is limited to €100. The editor is not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages.
This limitation does not apply where Dutch consumer-protection law or mandatory provisions of GDPR confer non-excludable rights on the reader.
Third-party links
The site links extensively to museum catalogues, primary-text repositories, Wikidata, scholarly archives, and other third-party resources. These links are provided for editorial completeness; bodhi does not endorse, control, or assume responsibility for the content, privacy practices, or availability of linked sites.
Changes to these terms
Material changes are noted by updating the last updated date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. Substantive revisions are also logged in the colophon acknowledgments section.
Governing law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. Disputes arising from or related to your use of the site are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts of the Netherlands, without prejudice to any non-excludable rights conferred on you by the laws of your country of habitual residence (where applicable under Article 6(2) of Regulation (EC) 593/2008, “Rome I”).
Severability
If any provision of these terms is held invalid or unenforceable by a competent court, the remaining provisions remain in full force and effect.
